The Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma captured its first grassroots championship after securing the Under-13 Division 2 title with a 28-20 conquest of the University of San Carlos (USC) in the finals of the Casino Active Cup Cebu Youth Basketball League 2017 yesterday at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts along Mango Avenue.
SWU head coach Rocky Alcoseba led the team to the promised land with no less than his father, the multi-titled head coach Yayoy Alcoseba, cheering him on from the sidelines.
The game was tied at 17-all in the fourth period when SWU made its move starting with a deuce from Rey Kristian de la Calzada and a triple from Maxile Cole for a 22-17 lead.
A free-throw by USC’s Kerk Javier stopped the bleeding but baskets from Nari Cabradillas and free-throws from dela Calzada sealed the title for SWU.
In other games, WJC Auto Sales captured the Under-19 Division 2 crown with a 52-42 win over Batang Elite.
The Under-16 Division 1 championship will once again feature a battle between Ateneo de Cebu and bitter rivals, University of the Visayas.
Ateneo de Cebu thwarted the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 44-37, while UV ousted Don Bosco, 54-50.
The Under-16 Division 2 title will be disputed by sister teams Ateneo de Cebu and SHS-Hijas de Jesus.
