Lanes to open after Mahiga bridge closure

VEHICULAR traffic congestion occurred near the Mahiga Bridge in Mandaue City yesterday morning due to ongoing road repairs in the area.

Glenn Antigua, chief of operations of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), said they had to close one of two lanes bound for Cebu City on the bridge to allow the project contractor to complete repairs on the bridge.

The closure was implemented as early as 8 a.m. yesterday and lasted for the rest of the day.

“By tomorrow (today), all lanes will be open for traffic. It was a slight repair of the bridge before it will be asphalted by the contractor,” Antigua said.
The traffic congestion was felt by motorists leaving Mandaue City bound for Cebu City.

The traffic reached the area near the North Bus Terminal and up to parts of MC Briones St. near the San Miguel Brewery Plant.

Another lane of the Mandaue-bound side of the bridge was opened for the Cebu City-bound vehicles.

This meant two lanes were already available for those going to Cebu City yesterday.

But only one lane was left open for vehicles coming from Cebu City going to Mandaue City since traffic volume was lower on that side.

Antigua said the contractor, PLD Construction Inc., is doing an asphalt overlay project for the Mahiga Bridge.

The project is under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-7). He said the project started last week.

Antigua said they were unable to advise motorists earlier on yesterday’s partial closure since the contractor only made the request for the closure last Monday evening.
