Women survivors of domestic violence were given the chance to showcase their singing talents in the concert “When Music Heals” that they staged at the Capitol social hall Saturday night.
The one-hour concert was organized by the Legal Alternative for Women Center, Inc. and the UP Serenata whose support bolstered the voices of the once-abused women.
The concert not only allowed the 14 survivors to discover their talent in singing but also to appreciate themselves as “empowered women.” Funds raised by the concert are meant to benefit the survivors.
Before the concert, new members of the board of the Legal Alternative for Women Center took their oath of office, followed by a speech from Governor Hilario Davide III.
The group first sang religious songs which was followed by a dance number by third year high school students of the University of the Philippines. The women also sang romantic and classical songs as well as contemporary hits.
“When Music heals” was capped with a performance of the song “Anak” by the choir, the survivors and some UP Cebu third year high school students.
Maria Cresanda Mahinay from UP High School said she was happy to be part of the concert that advocated women empowerment and gave hope to victims and survivors of domestic violence.
