Mandaue’s Omaña scores 1st-rd TKO win in China

BOXER-turned-Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Joseph Omaña scored a big win in China by beating Chinese newcomer Yong Hu in the undercard of Legend King Championships in Zhuhai City last Saturday.

The Mandaue City-native Omaña stopped Yong Hu via a first-round technical knockout, said Joeric Calisang of Team Joeric Boxing, who is Omaña’s promoter.

The 27-year-old Omaña, who is now based in China, quit boxing in 2009. As a boxer, Omaña piled up 12 wins, with six knockouts victories, and had five defeats and a draw.

Since becoming an MMA fighter, Omaña has already accumulated two wins and the same number of defeats.

Yong Hu, on the other hand, tasted his first loss in two fights.

“He wants to fight back here in Cebu even though he’s doing very well in China,” said Calisang.

Calisang said he is planning to include Omaña in an MMA team that he is planning to put up.

“Aside from boxing, I am also planning of putting up an MMA team composed of Cebuano fighters who will fight here and abroad. Joseph’s win is a wonderful start for the team and I hope he comes back in Cebu to formalize our agreement.”
