SOGOD bucked a short-handed roster to pull off a huge upset as it stunned former undefeated Danao City, 68-60, last Friday night in 2017 Cebu Governor’s Cup 21-Under Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Sogod Municipal Gym, Sogod town, northern Cebu.
Sogod played without team captain Alrancis Tiu, Rico Omongos and Carl Ace Berengel, but that hardly mattered as the host team finally barged into the win column after dropping its first assignment.
Sogod’s win tightened the race for the number two spot in North Division Bracket 2 after Balamban and Carmen posted separate wins earlier.
Despite the absence of key players Ricky Timosa and John Dave Seblos, who were slapped with one-game suspensions after figuring in a fight in their game versus Danao City last April 26, Balamban edged out Borbon, 111-109, while Carmen chalked up a 76-64 triumph over Asturias.
Danao, Balamban and Carmen now sport identical 2-1 (win-loss) cards, while Borbon and Asturias fell to 0-2. Tuburan is the only unbeaten team in the bracket at 2-0.
In South Division Bracket 3, Toledo City stayed hot as it dumped Alegria, 86-46, at the Alcantara Municipal Gym.
Toledo climbed to 3-0, while Alegria absorbed its third loss in as many games.
Badian dealt Barili its first defeat via 90-88 decision, while as Dumanjug humbled host team Alcantara, 71-53.
Badian, Barili and Dumanjug improved to 2-1, while Alcantara and Alegria still couldn’t get a win to drop 0-3.
Action continues tonight at the Boljoon Municipal Gym.
Santander (0-2) guns for its first win against Alcoy (1-1) at 6:30 p..m., while Boljoon (2-0) shoot for a third straight victory versus Ginatilan (1-1) in the 8 p.m. main match.
