Team Chan and San Remegio Properties hurdled a packed field to emerge as the qualifiers from the Cebu leg of the Red Bull Reign 3×3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday night at the old Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts.
The two squads earned tickets to the Philippine finals of this competition on May 27 at the Nagtahan Bridge Court in Pasig.
Dedicating the team’s performance to his elder brother, Joel Chan, who got shot and severely injured earlier in the week, Jason Chan skippered his squad to a scintillating show in the Final Four round, where it emerged as the top squad with a total of 34 points.
The top two teams with the most points after a single round-robin were declared as the co-winners.
In their match against San Remegio, former University of San Carlos hotshot Mike Cantonao put on a shooting display that had tournament director Vince Hizon giving him a high-five as he sank 10 shots from the rainbow area to lead them to a 25-15 victory.
Former University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers standout James Ferraren and the wide-bodied Leigh Dixon completed Team Chan.
With Team Chan snagging the first ticket to Manila, San Remegio and the University of San Jose-Recoletos-manned Hokage battled it out for the other slot.
In the end, it was the veteran-laden San Remegio, represented by Janjan Auditor, Randy Colonia, Floyd Taboada and Alwyn Aguirre, which advanced with a 13-11 win.
San Remegio finished the Final Four round with 28 points, Hokage had 27 while PharmaPro finished with 26.
Following the Cebu qualifier will be the Manila qualifier A and B, which will be staged on May 20 and 26 at the Buendia Food by the Court in Makati. The Last Chance qualifier and the finals will be on May 27.
