USJ-R volleybelle won’t entertain FEU offer yet
It’s rare that an athlete from Cebu would turn down an offer to play in the big leagues in the nation’s capital.
But University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) volleybelle Shiela Mae Kiseo did just that. At least only for now.
The 16-year-old was courted early this summer by the Far Eastern University (FEU) team but the Cebuana opted to stay with the Baby Jaguars, the team she helped win the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League – Central Visayas (SGVL-CV) leg crown.
“I really wanted to play in Manila but I might miss my parents and then I might decide to return to Cebu, which is not really something to be proud of so I decided to stay in Cebu for now,” Kiseo, an incoming Grade 11 student, said.
But Kiseo is not totally closing the doors on a potential move to FEU or any other squad up north. She said she will explore her options next year. “Maybe in college [I will consider it]. Just maybe,” she said.
Kiseo is not new to transferring. In fact, she has been to three different schools in the past four years she has been playing in the Cesafi.
Kiseo was an integral part in the roster of the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu team that finished runner-up in the 2015 Cesafi girls’ volleyball tournament. She then transferred to the University of San Carlos (USC) the next year and helped the Baby Warriors finish fourth.
It was just this summer that she moved again, joining local powerhouse USJ-R.
Kiseo made an impact in her first tournament as a Baby Jaguar as she not only helped the team win the SGVL-CV title but also went on to bag the 2nd Best Outside Attacker plum.
But for Kiseo, transferring from one team to another is not something she really likes to do.
“It was hard for me because I don’t want to transfer. I really want to stay in one school,” she said. “I really wanted to stay at USC but the strand I took was ABM, which is in North Campus. Our practices are held at the South Campus [so] I might be late for my classes.”
And the downside of transferring schools was evident in the recent SGVL-CV tournament, when Kiseo faced her former squad, the Baby Warriors.
“I was booed by some fans in our game against USC,” she said. “But I did not mind them.”
Kiseo said she’s just focusing now on how to gel well with USJ-R as they prepare for the Cesafi.
“So far my adjustment in USJ-R is really okay because we have been together during the Batang Pinoy, CVIRAA and Palaro.”
