TOLEDO City Energy’s protest to nullify Dalaguete’s 85-80 overtime win against them in the 2017 Cebu Governor’s Cup Under 21 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament last Saturday was denied.
Toledo protested that Dalaguete’s Ciegfred Vincent Pintor should have not been allowed to suit up after he committed a punching foul on Jan Joshen Mangaron of Minglanilla in their game last June 4.
Toledo contested that Dalaguete committed a violation when it allowed Pintor to play even if a punching foul warrants an automatic disqualification for the remainder of the competition.
In his protest letter addressed to Atty. Ramil Abing, Executive Director of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission, Toledo City team manager Justin Anthony de Jesus said Dalaguete’s victory should be nullified in Toledo’s favor, thus, sending his team to the championship instead of Dalagute .
Acting on the protest, the technical committee composed of league commissioner Danny Duran, and deputy commissioners Julian Macoy and Ed Aguelo looked into the incident and found out that Pinto just shoved the opposing player and did not throw a punch.
Toledo and the Talisay City Aqua Stars ended their quarterfinal campaigns with separate wins in the South Division of the last Wednesday night at the Barba Sports Complex in Toledo.
The Energy handed Samboan a merciless 114-86 drubbing, while the Aqua Stars buried Barili, 97-80.
The four squads are already out of title contention as Minglanilla and Dalaguete have already secured the two championship seats in the South Division.
Battling for the crown in the North Division are Mandaue City and the Consolacion Sarok Weavers.
Tonight in Tuburan town, Mandaue and Consolacion play against each other with the victor taking the homecourt edge for their best-of-three title series.
