Cebu grads top nursing exam

Baring, Contado and Villarante

Nona Casey Dela Serna Baring was watching a Korean drama on TV when the results of the nursing exam were released last Friday.

“I screamed when I learned that I passed and made it to the top 10 list,” said the 20-year-old Baring, who ranked second with an average rating of 85.20 percent.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the results of the June 2017 Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE) last Friday after eight working days.

Baring graduated from the Cebu Normal University (CNU) last March 29.

The youngest of three children of Nerissa and Luis Christopher and a resident of Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City, Baring wants to take up medicine.

Baring and four CNU graduates made it to the top 10. Cleo Abellana Gomez ranked third with 85 percent, Christa Lou Conejos Derasin landed seventh with 84.20 percent, and Adrian Paul Palang Marundan ranked ninth with 83.80 percent.

Luke Aaron Telewik Reponio rounded out the top 10 with 83.60 percent.

About 3,882 out of 11,176 examinees passed the nursing board exam.

Cebu Doctors University (CDU) also has three graduates in the top 10.

Kathryn Marie Languido So ranked fourth with 84.80 percent, Eaunice Fajaro Contado landed in fifth with 84.60 percent and Philip Ooi Simon ranked eight with 84 percent.

In a Facebook chat interview, Contado said she was in New York City when she learned of the results.

The 22-year-old Contado recalled that she was suspended last year in November and had to take a 70-day extension for duty hours.

While declining to elaborate on the suspension, Contado said her success should inspire others to rise up from their failure.

Another Cebu graduate, Elyza Kimberly Yap Villarante of Velez College ranked seventh at the exam with 84.20 percent.

The second of three children of Edward and Lillian Villarante, Elyza said she plans to take up medicine soon.
