Toroy tops Cebu City Scrabble tilt

CEBUANO word wizard Joel Toroy ruled the professional division of the Cebu City Scrabble Classic Open Tournament 2017 last Saturday at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Toroy took the title after finishing six wins and a loss with a +302 spread.

Both Jowar Ayuno and Renante Dela Cerna tallied a 5-2 win-loss record, but Ayuno took first runner-up honors with a +643 total spread (TS) against Dela Cerna’s +386.

The brother duo from the Cebu City National Science High School (CCNSHS) Lawrence Dave and Louis Drei Candia also made waves as the former formed the word “stoniest” worth 113 points to have the highest single turn (HST) while the latter had the highest single game (HSG) with 541 points.

Meanwhile, Lear Jet dela Cruz of CCNSHS logged a clean 5-0 record to triumph in the high school division.

He beat University of San Jose – Recoletos’ (USJ-R) Jullifer Joseph Tuba (+732 TS) and Cebu Institute of Technology – University’s (CIT-U) Kristin Avril Siangko (+618 TS) who both had 4-1 win-loss records.

CIT-U’s Fitz Gerald Gerundio earned the HST with the word “jurries” worth 124 points while CCNSHS’ Carmelo Rey Arranguez tallied 595 points to have the HSG.

In the elementary division, Louzelle Baringi-an of Quiot Elementary School completed five straight wins to defeat USJ-R’s Lord Garnett Talisic (+811 TS) and CIT-U’s Dan Krauss Salud (+456 TS), both of whom had 4-1 records, for the crown.
