PH chessers shine in S’gapore

SINGAPORE— Filipino National Master Roberto Suelo Jr., scored with 6.5 points in seven rounds over the weekend to rule the ACA Hari Raya Rapid Open Chess 2017 held in Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, Singapore.

Singapore-based Cebuano Lincoln Yap, a licensed International Arbiter by profession finished second with 6.0 points while third and fourth placers were Fide Master Andrean Susilodinata of Indonesia and Richard Lean Boon Cheng of Singapore who collected 4.5 points each.

Suelo bested FM Susilodinata in Round Two, drew with Yap in Round Five and beat Boon Cheng in the final round.

The 1996 Philippine Junior champion also topped the Thomson Chess Fiesta-Cup Rapid event last May also in Singapore.

Suelo currently works as a chess teacher in Singapore. Born and raised in Quezon City, the former son of a shoe maker is best remembered for steering the Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong to the crown during the national inter-collegiate championships in the mid 90s.
