TWO HUNDRED golfers will take part in the Cebu edition of the Phoenix Premium 98 Amateur Open this Friday at the Cebu Country Club.
Tournament director Liloh Evangelista was very pleased that they exceeded the initial 120 expected golfers to join in the 18-hole Stableford format competition. Some of the participants will be from Manila and Davao but most are from Cebu.
This will be the first time that Cebu will host the prestigious amateur golf tournament. It is also the first time the event will be held outside of Davao City in its 10-year existence.
According to Evangelista, the 200 golfers is a record for the tournament.
Popularly known in Davao City, the golf tournament organized by Phoenix Petroleum offers exciting prizes. Those who make a hole-in-one, for example, will win up to P1 million cash or a brand-new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. There are also exciting raffle prizes at stake.
Evangelista said more would have wanted to sign up for the event.
“We have to limit it at that number but there are a lot of players on the waiting list,” she said. “This is a good sign for us because we received a very nice response from the Cebuano golf community.”
Evangelista explained that the event is well known in Davao and that they can accommodate as much as 250 golfers there because they of a shotgun tee-off.
“Just like what we did in Davao, we will make sure that this tournament will be grand and full of fun.”
According to Evangelista, Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. owner Dennis Uy has already told her that he is planning to make the tournament an annual affair here in Cebu because of the huge turnout in the registration.
The players will be classified based on their current handicap points. There will be class A, B,C and D in the individual and partners categories.
