All-new Kia Rio: Class act

From being sporty, the all-new Kia Rio has now evolved to being one classy subcompact.

The fourth-generation Rio has undergone a complete makeover inside and out with the design now more mature compared to the model it replaces.

With a new clean-cut design, a tried-and-tested engine, and a reliable nameplate, expect the all-new Rio to make waves in the B-segment.

Cebu Daily News got to try the mid variant SL AT version for a weekend through the efforts of the Gateway Group, which owns Kia dealerships in Cebu.

The Rio’s body now has straight character lines surrounded by thinner head lights and taillights for a more European look.

The front end has the newest version of Kia’s patented “tiger-nose” grille, which is now thinner in height but wider.

Inside, the new Rio features a more modern cabin that is driver-focused, meaning everything is within the driver’s reach.

A straight silver bar that runs across the width of the dashboard gives it a wider and more elegant look. This also makes the interior look bigger.

Space, though, isn’t really one of the Rio’s strong points despite it being bigger than its predecessor.

The all-new Rio is 5 mm wider and 15 mm longer than its predecessor. This translates to a 1,120 mm legroom in the front and 770 mm in the rear.

Headroom has also improved based on measurements.

Still, tall people would feel a bit cramped, especially in the rear.

When it comes to luggage space, the Rio is also among the best in class as space has increased by 37 liters.

Not everything has actually changed from the previous edition of the Rio.

The newer Rio carries the third-generation’s 1.4-liter Kappa 4-cylinder engine that produces a maximum of 100 horsepower and 133 Nm of torque.

The engine is paired to either a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The high-revving powerplant is impressive, especially once it has gained momentum.

Three variants will be available for the hatchback version of the Rio: GL AT (top-of-the-line), SL AT and the SL MT. Just like before, there will also be a sedan version of the Rio.

Check out the all-new Rio in Kia Gorordo Cebu, Kia Mandaue, Kia Talisay and at satellite dealerships at SM City Cebu and SM Seaside City Cebu.
