THOUGH still far from being 100 percent, reigning Cesafi MVP Jed Colonia is excited to face off against Kai Sotto, SJ Belanguel and the rest of the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets in the San Remigio Properties Invitational Tournament starting this Thursday at the Magis Eagles Arena.
Colonia has been sidelined after suffering a torn ACL during Game 2 of the NBTC Cebu Finals earlier in the year but is targeting a return during the Cesafi season, where the Magis Eagles are the four-time defending juniors champs.
But first, there’s the matter of the visiting Sotto and the Blue Eaglets.
“A 15-year old 7-foot guy? I’m very excited. I’m also very excited to play with the rest of the Eaglets, especially with my former Batang Gilas teammates like SJ (Belanguel), Rap (Ralph Escalona), and Dave (Ildefonso),” said Colonia, a one-time Batang Gilas guard.
All eyes are expected to be on the 7-footer Sotto, the son of former PBA big man Ervin Sotto, who won Rookie of the Year honors with averages of 4.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
Belanguel, who at one point, practiced with the Magis Eagles owing to his familial connections with head coach Rommel Rasmo, will also turn heads especially after scorching the UAAP last season with norms of 15.7 points, 10 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per outing.
But Colonia and the rest of the Magis Eagles are up to the challenge.
“I actually feel pretty good. While I was recovering, I got to watch the past Cesafi games and studied them to analyze what I can add to my arsenal,”
Colonia said. “On a scale of 1-10, I think I’m an 8. I know I can keep up, but there’s still a lot to improve on like conditioning and strength.”
