MAO BA?

PHASEOUT

Netizens were not too sympathetic about yesterday’s transport strike that opposed the phaseout of aging jeepneys and Cebu’s Bus Rapid Transit project.

Leo Vincent Flores agreed with the government’s plans to modernize public transports: “Yes to modernization! It isn’t just about the safety, but also convenience. That’s the reason people are tempted to buy cars because when they use public transport vehicles like jeepneys, they would endure sweat, small space, dust, noise and other inconvenience there is.”

Another Facebook user, Januarth Gonzales, commented about the black smoke belched by old jeepneys: “Jjeepneys are already 10 to 20 years old, you surely have made a profit already. Most of the old jeepneys’ exhaust pipes give out black smoke. Also, these jeepneys usually malfunctions in the middle of the roads causing traffic.”

However, there were also those who showed support to the protesting groups. Thomas Stahl said, “Jeepneys are part of the Philippine culture! Do not remove them.”

Andres Aviles Nombrado suggested to “leave the jeepney alone” and to “phase out the jeepney driver after committing his third violation.”
