The director of Cebu City Police Office has been nominated as one of the Country’s Outstanding Police Officers in Service (COPS).
Senior Supt. Joel Doria will represent the region in the Police Commissioned Officers category of the search organized by the Metrobank Foundation.
“Sinuwerte tayo na nakasama tayo sa (We are lucky that we make it to the) final list (of nominees). Today yung (is the) final interview,” Doria said.
The nominees for the Non-Commissioned Officers category are those with ranks ranging from police officers 1 to 3 to senior police officers 1 to 4.
Doria expressed gratitude that the foundation recognized the city’s effort toward maintaining peace and order.
In an interview, Doria cited Cebu City’s war on drugs called “Oplan Pokemon” as one of the reasons why he got nominated.
Oplan Pokemon is named after the famous Pokemon Go mobile game.
Instead of catching “pocket monsters,” the 11 police stations of Cebu City simultaneously conduct buy-bust operations to catch drug personalities and other criminals.
Since its start in August 2016, the Oplan Pokemon already conducted 30 buy-bust operations and arrested more than 1,700 criminals, including big-time drug pushers, and confiscated around 2,500 grams of illegal drugs.
“So because of that accomplishment na-recognize tayo sa foundation at nasama sa final list,” Doria said.
The foundation will also award outstanding teachers and soldiers.
There will be ten awardees — four teachers, three soldiers and three police officers.
The 10 awardees will be honored during the Metrobank’s 54th anniversary celebration in September.
Each of them will receive P1 million cash, a trophy and a medal.
