A new era of Webmasters basketball will be uncovered this season in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), one that will see the University of Cebu field in a foreign player for the first time in league history.
With a new head coach in decorated mentor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba at the helm, basketball observers felt that it was only a matter of time before the Webmasters had a foreign reinforcement in their fold.
Enter 6-foot-7 Cameroonian Frederick Elombi, who just weeks ago, was brought in to replace first choice, Adam Camara.
Though the transition has been far from smooth, Elombi admitted, he said that he continues to push hard day in and out in order to help place UC back in the Final Four for the first time in six seasons.
“It’s a great honor for me to be their first import. It’s a great experience with my new teammates,” said Elombi.
“It’s been good. I want to thank my coaching staff and my teammates. It’s been very fun being with them because they’re very welcoming and supportive,” he added.
After taking over Camara’s slot several weeks ago, Elombi shared that he has been diligently working with the coaching staff to learn the intricacies of Alcoseba’s system.
“It’s been very challenging being integrated completely into the new system. I’m continually pushing. I’ll get there,” said the soft-spoken African.
Elombi shared that he has had to make several adjustments to his game after coming over to the Webmasters side, as back in Cameroon, he played on the perimeter being a natural two-guard. Here in Cebu, owing to the fact that he’s the tallest man on the squad, he has had to learn playing inside.
“My game has not been really what I play like in Cameroon. Back in Cameroon, I’m a wingman. I can shoot from the outside. Here I have to merge with the system and play my part.”
