LAPU-LAPU City’s Jerish John Velarde bagged a silver medal in the 13th Asian Schools Chess Championships held last week in Panjin, Liaoning, China.
The 11-year-old Cebuano Candidate Master (CM) finished the under-11 blitz competition with 8.0 points, finishing second to Uzbekistan’s Almas Rakhmatullaev, who won the gold with 8.5 points.
Velarde was only defeated once in the under-11 blitz competition by Rakhmatullaev in the fourth round.
Velarde beat Chinese players Li Yuanzhou, Demen Baoqin, Yang Jingsen, Richard Ying, Yue Jiongchen, Wu Daiwei, Wu Bing Shen and Malaysian Iskandar Zulkippli.
