The 12th edition of the University Run (UR) of the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) was launched yesterday at the Run For Sight office.
This year’s edition of the annual race held in line with CDU’s University Week will be held Aug. 20, and it pays tribute to the late CDU Hospital president and chairman of the board Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal Jr., who passed away last June 29. The UR is the brainchild of Larrazabal.
To honor him, Larrazabal’s face will be engraved in the finisher’s medal for the 10-kilometer race.
The distances this year will be shorter than previous editions. Distances offered this year will be 10 kilometers, 5k and 3k.
“We decided to shorten the distance this year and we also decided to make it a noncompetitive run since we are still mourning the passing of our father,” said Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III, founder of the Run for Sight Foundation. “But we will still give the top 10 finishers in each category special prizes.”
Present during the launching yesterday was Dr. Philip Larrazabal, Yong’s wife Donna, race director Joel Juarez of Coco Running and Arnold Choachuy who represented major sponsor Sunsports.
Organizers are expecting to draw 2,500 runners, mostly students of CDU. The starting point for the race is at the CDU campus at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
