The University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars made it two in a row as they put down the Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras, 103-88, in the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament last night at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The Jaguars dominated the second half and appeared to be on their way to the easy win as they erected a 79-69 lead early in the final frame. However, the Cobras got a spark from Shaquille Imperial who sank three straight triples to bring them back to within three, 80-83.

But the Jaguars were relentless and kept the Cobras at bay with a 13-2 blast capped by two back-breaking triples from star guard Jaybie Mantilla that restored their lead to double-digits with 3:56 left to play.

Mantilla was superb for USJ-R, which tied the University of San Carlos for the lead in the standings at 2-0 (win-loss), with 21 points, six rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Fellow Mythical Five member RJ Dinolan added 20 while Victor Nunez filled the stat sheet with 15 points, six boards, two assists, two steals and a block.

Rookie Julius Pacunuayan also helped out with 10 points and five rebounds.

SWU dropped to 0-2 in spite of the 18 points apiece by John Lloyd Luz and Imperial.

Meanwhile in the high school division, four-time defending
champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles and the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers forged a deadlock at the top of the standings after they pasted their respective rivals.

Ateneo de Cebu clobbered the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens, 78-55, while UV blew away the Don Bosco Greywolves, 88-69. The two rivals tote identical 2-0 marks.

Patrick Wilson Yu led the Magis Eagles in scoring with 17 points while John Benedict Yu backed him up with 12. Coco Tuadles added 10.

For the Baby Lancers, Jake Rosete continued to stake his claim as UV’s main weapon in the absence of former gunner Jancork Cabahug as he piled on 19 points. Jhiey Paraldo added 17.

In the final game in high school action, the Cebu Eastern College Dragons snatched their first victory of the season with an 87-77 victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers.
