The Philippines started to heat up in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
At press time, the country held a 7-8-7 (gold-silver-bronze) tally in the biennial multi-sporting meet good for sixth place.
Host Malaysia still leads the medal tally with a 33-24-15 haul.
Filipino fencers continued to bring in the victories, adding four medals on Tuesday.
Brennan Louie gave the Philippines its seventh gold medal after besting Nathaniel Perez, who took home the silver, in the all-Filipino final in men’s individual foil.
Hanniel Abella, meanwhile, also settled for the silver medal after losing to her Vietnamese foe in the women’s individual epee final.
She beat compatriot Harlene Raguin, who salvaged the bronze medal in the semifinal.
On Monday, teen fencers Samantha Kyle Catantan and Maxine Isabel Esteban bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Agatha Chrystenzen Wong delivered a gold medal for the Philippines after ruling the women’s taijiquan event also on Tuesday.
Wong’s gold medal win came just a day after bagging the silver in the taijijian event.
She registered a score of 9.66, besting Basma Lachkar of Brunei (9.54) and Lin Ying Ho of Singapore (9.44).
It was the first gold of the Philippines in wushu after Daniel Parantac, who won the gold in the last two editions of the regional games, faltered in all of his events this year.
Another gold medalist was Kaitlin de Guzman, who won in gymnastics women’s artistic uneven bars.
The 17-year-old De Guzman, daughter of former SEA Games champion Cintamoni Dela Cruz, garnered 12.875 points in her routine to bag the top honors.
She bested Malaysia’s Tracie Ang who had 12.550 and Indonesia’s Rifda Iranalithfi who scored 12.075.
De Guzman is competing in two more events including her favorite floor exercise.
The other gold for the Philippines was from Reyland Yuson Capellan, who snagged the men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise.
