CRIME PREVENTION WEEK

As the first week of September is declared as “Crime Prevention Week,” law enforcement agencies in Central Visayas are aiming to strengthen their relationship with the community.

This is to prevent an increase of all forms of criminality in the region.

This year’s Crime Prevention Week, with the theme “Mamamayan mapagmasid, kapayapaan ang maihahatid,” will kick off tomorrow, August 31.

Lawyer Resty Sibay, National Police Commission (Napolcom-7) information officer, said the main purpose of the celebration is to foster better relationship between the community and the police.

“Makita nato nga nag-kinahanglan gyud (We saw the need for) community’s participation as well as vigilance in order to achieve peace and order,” Sibay said during the AGIO-PIA forum yesterday.

Napolcom-7 has been conducting seminars and orientations to chief executives, police officers and the community about their respective roles toward achieving peace and order.

“That’s the purpose of our celebration. It’s not only peace and order but also other issues that affect community development,” Sibay said.

Senior Supt. Renato Dugan, Police Regional Office Community Relations officer in Central Visayas, said the celebration will be held from September 1 to 7 and it will be launched tomorrow in Bohol.

Dugan said that from July to August this year, Central Visayas got the highest percentage of index crimes all over the country at 15.88. These include illegal drugs, robbery, murder, homicide, among others.

Dugan said this is only normal since there are many highly urbanized cities in the region, and index crimes are mostly committed in these areas.

He explained that the high percentage of index crimes also resulted from the numerous police operations conducted in the region. “Nisaka siya kay daghan tag (It increased because we conducted numerous) operations against all forms of criminality,” Dugan added.

Dugan cited the “Oplan Pokemon: One-Time Big-Time” operations of the Cebu City Police Office as an example.
