The annual Talisay City Mayor’s Cup 2017 basketball tournament will be adding for the first time, the more exciting open/commercial division which will feature Cebu’s top commercial and ex-varsity cagers.

The event will kick off this Sunday at the Talisay City Sports Complex in Talisay City, south Cebu.

The new division is conceptualized by Cebu first district Representative Gerald Anthony ‘Samsam’ Gullas Jr. who himself is quite active in basketball.

Gullas said in a press conference yesterday at the Talisay City Hall’s mayor office that he decided to add the open/commercial division to provide continuous exposure to local commercial players.

“This tournament is something that our local commercial players should be looking forward to every year because this will help them compete in a quality basketball tournament and at the same time give them continuous exposure since it will be held after Minglanilla’s Emil’s Cup. The city of Naga and Carcar are also planning to have their own basketball tournaments,” said Rep. Gullas.

He was joined in the presser by his grandfather, Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas and Talisay City councilor Rudy Cabigas.

The open/commercial division has seven teams headed by Emil’s Cup reigning champions, SG/ARG Builders along with San Remegio Beach Club, Fighter Fifty, Christwil/EGS Asia, Aspa, Kimlex and Shereen.

The champion in the open/commercial division will take home P80,000 while the second placer will get P50,000. The third placer will receive P30,000 and P20,000 will go to the fourth placer.

The open/commercial division competition will kick off on September 18.

The event will also feature juniors and seniors categories featuring players from the city’s barangays. There will be also a volleyball tournament that will have a men and women’s division which will also be composed of Talisay City players.

The opening ceremonies on Sunday at the Talisay City Sports Complex will be attended by Congressman Gullas himself, mayor Gullas, vice mayor Alan Bucao, city councilors Gail Restauro and Cabigas. It will start at 5 p.m.
