THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars (USJ-R) seeks a three-way tie for first place while the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters will be looking to extend their winning streak to three games when the two squads clash today in the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Sporting a 4-1 (win-loss) card—half-a-game behind the league-leading University of San Carlos (USC) and the University of the Visayas (UV), which are at 5-1—the Jaguars braintrust led by veteran head coach Jun Noel understands the daunting task at hand against the UC team sporting a 3-2 record.

“We’ll try to control the production of their import, or give the pipeline to (Frederick) Elombe and limit the locals,” said Noel, whose team’s rise up the ranks has surprised most pundits.

Elombe, UC’s Cameroonian recruit, has ran roughshod over his defenders in the last two games, averaging 34.5 points and 18 rebounds in victories over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U).

UC’s multi-titled tactician Yayoy Alcoseba, meanwhile, is set to deploy his best defenders on USJ-R’s dynamic duo of point guard Jaybie Mantilla and high-scoring forward RJ Dinolan in the hopes of chalking up a third straight win.

“We have to limit the output of their main duo of Mantilla and Dinolan ,” said Alcoseba.

In the high school division, the UV Baby Lancers aim to extend their unbeaten streak to six games when they face off against the USC Baby Warriors.

The UC Baby Webmasters will also be looking for their fourth win in a row when they face off against the Cebu Eastern College Dragons.

The other juniors game features the USJ-R Baby Jaguars seeking to bounce back from consecutive setbacks in a match versus the Don Bosco Greywolves.
