WHILE much of the publicity during the opening weekend of Season 80 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament went the way of University of the Philippines’ Cebuano hotshot Paul Desiderio, another Cebuano subtly had an impressive season debut for the National University Bulldogs.
This was former Ateneo de Cebu two guard Dave Wilson Yu, who had 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals in an 86-69 win over University of the East, 86-69, last Saturday.
Yu, who had been hampered by injuries in each of the last two seasons, finally broke out and sparked the Bulldogs in a third period rally that put the game out of UE’s reach.
Asked if he expected this of himself this season, the 6-foot-2 Yu admitted that he did but added that he still demands more of himself.
“I sort of expected this but I know I can do so much more,” said Yu.
Yu said that the most important thing for him would be consistency, especially if they are to regain their lofty standing in the UAAP.
“I need to be consistent. That’s how you gauge great players if they play well on a consistent basis.”
More than anything, Yu was elated that the work he put in during the offseason is paying off.
“It just feels good! The unseen hours really paid off but as I said a while a go, I need to be consistent in my game and not be contented. I’ve got a long ways to go.”
