DENR to lead SRP cleanup

CELEBRATING ICC DAY

For the 32nd celebration of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day with the theme “Together for our Ocean,” the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas (DENR-7) will take the lead in cleaning the coasts along the South Road Properties starting 2 p.m. tomorrow, September 16.

During the Kapihan sa PIA on Wednesday at the DENR conference room, Queen Aloyan, the focal person for this year’s ICC, said the cleanup will be conducted in the afternoon because it is low tide by then and it’s easier to collect trash.

Aloyan said the participants will be given data cards to record the trash that they collected.

“The ICC data cards will be given to volunteers so they could record what they have picked up. This is to monitor what type of garbage are polluting our coastal areas. The ICC would then compare the data from the past years to the current data and would release a report two months later,” she said.

Aloyan revealed that most trash they were able to pick up in the previous cleanups were food wrappers, plastic bags, cigarette butts and straws.

Aloyan said that for this year’s activity, they are aiming to achieve zero waste.

“For the past years, we noticed that there were still trashes left behind after the event. So this year we are aiming to achieve zero waste,” she explained.

For this year’s ICC Day, the DENR will take the lead in partnership with local government units concerned.

According to Aloyan, the cleanup is not only limited to Cebu City side of SRP but also to other areas under the jurisdiction of Talisay City.
