Defending champion USPF, DBTC dispute last semifinal spot in Cesafi boys’ volleyball

Reigning champions University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) aims to keep its title-retention bid alive when it takes on the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) in a do-or-die game for a spot in the semifinals of the F2 Logistics Cesafi boys’ volleyball tournament today at the USPF covered court.

Both DBTC and USPF are tied at second place in the Pool A ladder with identical 2-1 (win-loss) records. Both need a win to join the University of Cebu (UC), Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma and the University of San Carlos (USC) in the semifinal round.

USPF head coach Cecil Jotojot said he is hoping that his players can keep their focus heading into their game against a dangerous DBTC squad that has shown some noticeable improvements after missing the playoffs last season.

“We just have to focus on our teamwork tomorrow (today) to win versus DBTC,” Jotojot said.

In the girls’ division, also looking to make it to the semifinals is SWU-Phinma, which is currently in second place with a 4-1 mark behind the top-seeded University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), which clinched the first semis spot last weekend by sweeping its five elimination games.

SWU-Phinma is set to take on a formidable USPF squad which sports a 3-1 slate. Their game is scheduled at 5 p.m.

Also in the girls’ classification, reigning champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu aims to keep its playoff hopes alive when it locks horns with Cebu Eastern College while UC challenges the winless Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU).

In the women’s division, the SWU-Phinma Lady Cobras hope to strengthen their grip on the top spot as they eye for their third win in as many games when they battle USC while USPF goes up against CDU.

In the lone men’s action, the University of the Visayas looks to sustain its momentum after stunning last year’s runner-up SWU-Phinma last Friday as it takes on USPF at 11 a.m.
