The University of Cebu (UC) and University of San Carlos (USC) showed their strength in athletics by starting hot in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) athletics competition at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

UC blazed the tracks in the high school division by winning eight gold medals, five silvers and five bronze medals after the first day while USC led the partial medal standings in the college division with 10 gold medals, three silvers and three bronze medals.

Gold medalists so far for UC are Josie Inemedo (200m run, 400m run and 400m hurdles), John Paul Apilan (110m hurdles and 400m hurdles), Elyzza Mae Salinas (100m hurdles), Carl Babao (discus throw) and Jhuvan Jehn Baculot (high jump).

In the collegiate division, USC’s gold medalists after day 1 are Roneth Ayuda (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and long jump), Joselu Rebalde (400m run and 200m run), Bera Rose Saragena (discus throw), Dave Dindang (110m hurdles), Melody Perez (3,000m run), Ruel Algufera (1,500m run) and Geniecel Saballa (1,500m run).

Both teams are also currently second placers in both divisions. USC trails UC in the high school competition while UC is second to USC in the collegiate wars.

There are a total of 70 events scheduled in the two-day competition which continues today.
