CDN bags two trophies at the 18th CAMMA

CEBU Daily News senior reporter took home two awards from the 18th Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards held on Sunday night.

Ador Vincent Mayol won the feature and news writing in English categories.

Mayol also won both awards during the 17th CAMMA in 2015.

Mayol’s winning pieces were centered on the International Eucharistic Congress 2016, faith of the abandoned elderly, standing up against death penalty and drug rehabilitation in several articles that included “Light at the End of the Tunnel” that was published on March 18, 2017.

“It is nothing but God’s work. I am simply a recipient of God’s mercy. May the Lord be glorified through every article I and other journalists come up with,” Mayol said.

Msgr. Dennis Villarojo, the auxiliary bishop of Cebu, said that the media play a significant role in affirming Christian values that influence the minds of the young people.

Villarojo, in his opening remarks, acknowledged that modernity has thrown social communications into a battlefield.

“We’re in a battle of conflicting values and principles. Our morality has been put in the edge. In the present generation, our consciousness is dominating,” Villarojo said.

Other winners for the print category included The Freeman’s Aldo Banaynal for photojournalism, Banat News for Editorial Writing (Cebuano) and Sun.Star Cebu managing editor Cherry Ann Lim for special writing (English). Sun.Star Cebu also took home the awards for column writing (English), editorial writing (English); Super Balita reporter Shiela Gravinez won both awards in special writing and feature writing in Cebuano. The Cebuano paper also won the award for editorial cartooning, column writing (Cebuano), and news writing (Cebuano). The editorial writing in Cebuano award went to Banat News.

For the radio category, the radio public affairs award went to dyHP’s “Straight to the Point” program hosted by lawyer Ruphil Bañoc, who also writes a column with the same name in Cebu Daily News.

The radio news program award went to dyLA’s “Balita sa Alas Siete,” anchored by the radio station’s manager, Jhunnex Napallacan, who is also a correspondent of Cebu Daily News and Philippine Daily Inquirer. The same radio station won the radio commentary award.
Brigada News FM, WRock, dyAB also took home trophies.

Awards and special citations were also handed to the International Pharmaceuticals Inc., Cebu Advertising Services and Promotions, RMN dyHP and Above the Line Productions for the advertising category.

Uphold the truth
Villarojo challenged all media organizations and practitioners in Cebu to always be the bearers of truth.
“If we life a person, he or she can do no wrong. If we like a person… and he kills somebody, we either take it as peacekeeping or an honest mistake,”

Villarojo said, noting how people can get blinded on the idea of liking somebody or something despite the intentions.

As the channel of information dissemination, the media should be responsible in delivering accurate, sincere and morally upright facts, according to Villarojo.

With the differences of people’s perspective, principles and stand on present political and social issues, Villarojo said the media should know where to stand.

“May you always uphold the truth even if they don’t like you anymore,” Villarojo said, throwing the huge challenge to Cebu media.

New logo
As part of the celebration of the 18th CAMMA, the Cebu Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications also unveiled the new logo of CAMMA.

The new logo consists of two letter C which represents the Catholic Church and Cebu. The logo also has a host and a cross, which signifies Christ as the heart of communication. On top are the images of the Magellan’s cross, an antenna and a dove.

Now on its 18th run, the biannual awarding ceremony aims to encourage the print, television and radio organizations to help promote Christian values and morals and in helping in building a better nation.

CAMMA was launched in 1991, and was done annually until year 1998. After 1998, the award is being given every two years.
