WORK at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Terminal 2 project has now resumed, five days after Department of Labor and Employment in Central Visayas (DOLE-7) stopped operations at the construction site last Sunday due to work violations discovered during inspections related to an accident causing a worker’s death.
Acting Director Cyril Ticao of DOLE-7 said that the management and contractors of the MCIA terminal 2 project have complied with and corrected the violations, and the work suspension order of the construction project have been lifted.
An accident last September 22 at the MCIA terminal 2 worksite where an air compressor lifted from a crane fell on a worker, Adolfo Flores, and caused his death.
Adolfo worked for one of the subcontractors of the project, RCK Reydel Construction.
The violations, which were all addressed and corrected, included lacking accredited safety practitioners; no safety officers for all subcontractors; no standard rigging procedure; no standard lifting procedure; no safety orientation for all operations supervisors and construction workers; inappropriate or substandard lifting devices used for lifting activities; and no Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) license presented for all contractors and subcontractors except for Megawide-GMR Infrastructure Singapore PTE. “Right after the mandatory conference last Monday, they already complied and settled everything. The contractor has also deployed their safety officer from Manila to MCIA,” Ticao said.
Ticao also revealed that RCK Reydel Construction Corporation has also turned over more than P200,000 cash assistance to Flores’ family.
