WITH the looming adoption of automation and data sciences as an industry standard in the coming years, digital transformation has become an urgent necessity for businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

This was the message presented to participating MSMEs during Acer Philippines’ TECHonomy Forum in Cebu City on Monday.

“MSMEs have significantly contributed to the country’s economy by creating jobs and opportunities at the grassroots level,” said Carren Garcia, Acer Philippines senior commercial sales manager, in a discussion at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

Hosted by Acer Philippines and Microsoft Philippines, the TECHonomy Forum 2017 is the first forum of its kind in the country that tackles the role of technology in economics.

Cebu was Acer’s second stop after they launched the forum in Manila recently.

TECHonomy

TECHonomy, a portmanteau of technology and economy, aims to support Cebu’s thriving economy by offering a value-adding thought-leadership platform where businesses and stakeholders can exchange knowledge and ideas on the benefits of digital transformation and innovation.

CV MSMEs

According to the latest statistics from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Central Visayas has the fourth most number of MSMEs in the country with more than 50,000 registered enterprises in the region.

Data from the Philippine Senate show that these ventures generate 200,000 jobs.

Technology adoption and transformation plays a vital role in boosting the competitiveness of local business and industries, specifically the burgeoning MSME sector.

Garcia said the best way they can support the growth and expansion of this sector and other industries is to introduce them to the benefits of technology transformation.

“Cebu has sustained its economic growth not just because of tourism, but also due to its immense capacity to incubate businesses driven by a creative and dynamic talent pool,” she said.

Garcia said that in the forum, thought leaders and industry thinkers from various sectors converge to champion digital transformation among Cebu’s businesses.

She said they believe having this kind of platform supports broader efforts and initiatives to make the Philippines more tech-advanced and globally competitive.

Unlock possibilities

Gibson Lin, global chief trainer for Acer Cloud Technology, said technology has leveled the playing field for everyone.

“The best businesses are now the ones who actively utilize innovations like cloud and Internet of Things to gain customer insights and streamline operations, among others,” he said.

Lin said their thrust is to enable businesses to unlock new possibilities through the infusion of software, hardware, and services into their operations.

“Through today’s event, we are expecting to usher the digital transformation of Cebu’s local businesses,” he said.

Founded in 1976, Acer today is one of the world’s top ICT companies and has a presence in over 180 countries.
