Two religious celebrations marking the 5th Canonization of San Pedro Calungsod scheduled this Saturday, Oct. 21, were deferred by the Commission on Youth (COY) as the Archdiocese of Cebu continues to mourns the death of Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

COY Youth Coordinator Frankel Margallo confirmed that the 4:30 p.m Pontifical Mass and the 6 pm solemn procession at the Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod will be rescheduled.

He said the late cardinal’s wake will be transferred from Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral to the Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod at that time.

“The planned activities will have to be postponed in solidarity of the archdiocese in mourning the loss of Cardinal Vidal,” said an COY official statement released by the COY Thursday afternoon.

In a separate interview, Margallo said they will hold a 30-minute eulogy and song tribute for Cardinal Vidal at 2:30 p.m followed by a 3 p.m Mass on Saturday.

“We are also finalizing other details on the activity for Saturday since we are coordinating with the organizing body of Cardinal Vidal’s wake. The tribute is short to also give way to other people who want to visit his wake,” Margallo said.

They also expect more than 500 youth members in Cebu to attend on Saturday.
The tribute was their way of expressing gratitude to the late Cardinal Vidal who instituted the the Local World Youth Day (LWYD) in 1985.

The LWYD is the local version of World Youth Day in the Archdiocese of Cebu scheduled before the Holy Week.
