FILIPINO billiards master Efren “Bata” Reyes flashed his vintage form anew, winning the 16th annual Derby City Classic’s One Pocket division on Friday at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana Elizabeth, Indiana, USA.
It was Reyes’ seventh time to win the prestigious title after the Billiards Hall of Famer crushed American Shannon Daulton, 3-1 in the finals. The win was worth $12,000 for Reyes and keep him in the running for the $20,000 “Master of the Table” title, which is awarded to the top player across the Bank Pool, One Pocket and 9-Ball Divisions.
Daulton settled for the $6,000 runner-up purse.
In a field that featured 298 players, the 59-year-old Reyes was the only player to not suffer a loss. The unique format would have allowed Reyes to buy back in the event and face Daulton again, had he lost the first match.
Just last month, Reyes, a former world 9-ball champion, won a bronze medal in the carom event of the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar. /Correspondent Marlon Bernardino
