Korean consulate seeks end to probe of Korean’s death

The Korean Consulate in Cebu asked the Cebu City police to stop its investigation into the death of a Korean inside a hotel room last Tuesday afternoon.

SPO1 Janice Tamayo said the Korean Consulate informed the Korean’s family who then told them that they believe his son committed suicide.

The 34-year-old Korean reportedly called his parents and informed them of his plan to put an end to his life.

Joseph Shin, chief officer of the Korean Consulate in Cebu, said they fully believe that there was no foul play and that the case is now considered close.

But police believe otherwise.

Tamayo said the Korean may have been a robbery victim after investigators found out that some of his belongings were moved from their original places and his wallet was empty.

The victim’s body also had bruises indicating that a struggle may have ensued that caused his death.

Senior Supt. Ryan Devaras, chief of the city police’s Investigation Management Detection Branch, said they will still continue the investigation despite the consulate’s request.
