CEBU’S promising taekwondo stars showcased their skills in the 80th season of the UAAP taekwondo poomsae tournament last Tuesday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Manila.

Leading the way was McAvengyr Alob of De La Salle University (DLSU), who won a gold in the team poomsae event.

Fellow Cebuano Lyan Llanto of University of the Philippines (UP) bagged a silver in the same category while 2017 SEA Games bronze medalist Rinna Babanto, also of DLSU, collared a silver in the individual women’s poomsae.

The Talisay City native Alob, the son of renowned taekwondo mentor Avengyr Alob, also salvaged a bronze medal in the individual men’s poomsae event.

National Team member Rodolfo Reyes of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) reigned in the contest while Ateneo de Manila University’s Marvin Gabriel Vidal finished second place.

Babanto’s SEA Games teammate Jocelyn Ninobla of the University of Santo Tomas took the gold in the competition while Patricia Javier of UP settled for bronze.

UST regained the overall title in the poomsae competition this year with Ninobla and Reyes’ golds while defending champions DLSU dropped to second place with a gold, two silvers and one bronze. Far Eastern University was at third with one gold and one bronze.
