Reconsider incentives for tanods, Tom urged

The Barug Team Rama bloc in the Cebu City Council called on Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to consider giving incentives to barangay tanods every two months instead of six.

During a press conference, Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera said they agreed with Osmeña’s signing of a memorandum requiring tanods to submit an accomplishment report twice a month, instead of weekly.

“But then again, we try also to appeal if pwede ba ang financial assistance sa tanods will be given every two months dili kay every six months (if it is possible for the tanods to be given a financial assistance every two months instead of six months,)” Garganera said.

Councilor Raymond Garcia said while the revised requirement was a welcome development, barangay tanods should not be burdened with doing paperwork.

Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr. agreed, saying that requiring tanods to submit accomplishment reports twice a month is difficult for them.

He said submitting these reports should be done once a month.

“Ang trabaho sa tanod dili mana mao ang paghimo ug suwat or paghimo ug report. Pagtabang man sa atong kapulisan as an auxiliary force (A tanod’s work consists not of making written reports but to help the police as an auxiliary force),” he said.

Osmeña told reporters earlier that while he agrees with giving them monthly incentives, “they won’t receive anything if they don’t perform.”

Last August, Osmeña warned the tanods that he will stop giving them their P4,000 monthly allowance unless they submit a weekly report.

But Osmeña changed his mind and he signed a memorandum stating that tanods should submit an accomplishment report twice a month. /Silliman University Intern Julien Marie Pinero
