Windmill project study in Cebu okayed

A STUDY to build projects to harness the power of the wind in Cebu province had been approved by the Department of Energy in Central Visayas (DOE-7).

Lou Arciaga, information officer of DOE-7, said that these projects would be situated in the stretch of Balamban-Toledo-Minglanilla-Cebu City and Argao-Dalaguete-Alcoy-Boljoon-Oslob.

Arciaga said service contractors Amihan Energy Corporation and Ryanyx Construction and General Services Corp. had already presented their work program for the projects.

The service contractors will be made up of foreign investors and their local partners.

She said that the project would be similar to that of building windmills in coastline of Ilocos to harness the power of the wind.

In Cebu, however, the contractors would study if it would be viable to build windmills in the highlands.

“The project study would determine how viable and feasible the project is. This will depend on the wind speed of those areas,” Arciaga said.

Arciaga also clarified that since the project was still at the pre-development stage, they had yet to determine how much energy the windmills could contribute to the power supply of the Visayas region and how much the project would cost.

The project study is expected to last for at least one year.
