HARDCORE Cebuano athletes have finally something to look forward to as the first ever Spartan Race Philippines comes to Cebu in June 2018.
Organizer Guenter Taus, CEO of Spartan Race Philippines, made the announcement in a press conference last Wednesday evening at the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.
The Spartan Race is one of the fastest growing endurance obstacle races in the world which was established on 2010.
“Obstacle racing is one of the fastest growing sport in the world. It’s an alternative to triathlons and marathons,” said Taus. “The whole idea here is to combine different disciplines into one serious challenge.”
Also present during the press conference were fellow organizers Patricia Mendoza, Fred Joye and Marco Polo Plaza Cebu General Manager Brian Connelly.
Just this year, more than a thousand hardcore athletes took part in the inaugural race held in San Mateo Rizal. The next race will be on February 24 in Clark, Pampanga.
Aside from the press conference a contract signing also took place to forge the partnership between Spartan Race Philippines and Marco Polo Plaza Cebu as its official hotel partner.
A Spartan Race usually has four distances: the sprint, which is a 6-kilometer run with 24 obstacles; the super, which has a 14k distance and 30 obstacles; the beast, a 21k run with 34 obstacles; and the super beast, a grueling 42k run with 68 obstacles.
For the Cebu leg, Taus said that they will only offer the sprint distance as an introductory challenge for the Cebuanos who are usually into triathlons and marathons.
“In marathons, all you do is run. In a Spartan race, one can balance lower and upper body workout, which is more challenging but fulfilling at the same time,” Taus added.
