Moalboal Mayor Inocentes Cabaron dangled a P50,000 reward to anyone who could provide information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual, who killed a green turtle, the remains of which were found on the shores of Barangay Basdiot, Moalboal on Wednesday.
Cabaron announced the reward offer in a text message sent to reporters on December 1, Friday noon.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) is now coordinating with owners of companies offering diving services, law enforcers and the local government of Moalboal to find leads on the person who killed the green turtle, which is classified as an endangered species.
Rommel Kirit, Penro senior environmental manager, said the wound on the turtle’s neck caused its death.
“There is high possibility that the wound was inflicted by a spear gun which is a banned fishing gear in Moalboal town,” said Kirit.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – 7 (DENR – 7) is now looking into the case.
A netizen posted the photo of the dead green sea turtle on November 29. It went viral and sparked outrage among netizens.
