Fiel, San Pascual are Cepca grand finals champion woodpushers

YVES FIEL and Jerry San Pascual ruled the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) grand finals chess tournament’s groups A and B, respectively, last Sunday at the residence of its president Jerry Maratas at the posh Royale Cebu Estates subdivision in Consolacion town, north Cebu.

Fiel dethroned Group A’s champion Rogelio Enriquez Jr. despite both woodpushers scoring 4.0 points each after five rounds of competition.
San Pascual, on the other hand, had a perfect run by scoring 9.0 points to top Group B.

Fiel was named the champion after he beat Enriquez Jr. in their showdown in the earlier rounds.

As per tournament rules, in case two players have a tied score, the winner should be determined depending on who wins in their match during the competition.

Enriquez Jr. was declared second placer while Zilverstein Torres placed third with 3.0 points.

Fiel served as a guest player in the tournament after Cepca officials were not able to organize a monthly qualifying tournament earlier this year.

Aside from beating Enriquez Jr., Fiel also won against Jojo Moralla, Aireen Robillos and Torres. His only loss was against Peterson Sia.

San Pascual, meanwhile, went perfect in group B while Martin Sean Kwan settled for second with 8.0 points followed by Percival Fiel with 6.5 points.

San Pascual won against John Velarde, Roel Hortelano, Mario Bustillo, Jun Kidlat, Joe Atillo, Manny Abucay, Eddy Flores, Fiel and Kwan.

In the non-qualifiers division, Vince dela Torre clinched the title by scoring 5.5 points after six rounds of competition. Solon Bagalihog placed second with 4.5 points followed by Maratas at third place with 4.0 points.

The winning woodpushers received cash prizes and trophies after the tournament. Around 50 woodpushers both qualifiers and non-qualifiers competed in Cepca’s final tournament of the year.
