THE 2nd Harvey Duke Harris III and Voltaire Sevillano Handicapping Chess Tournament takes place today at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
The tournament is held to commemorate the life of Harvey Duke Harris III, who was shot dead in the US in 2016. He is the nephew of Cebuano Grand Master (GM) Enrico Sevillano, who is organizing this event together with his brother Voltaire Sevillano.
Another member of the organizing crew is International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap. He said that just like his uncles, Harris is also an avid chess player.
The then 18-year-old Harris was gunned down by unknown assailants in their home in Lexington, Kentucky.
One of the chess tournament’s mission is to seek justice for Harris.
The tournament will use a seven-round Swiss system format with participants divided into two classes: class A and class B.
Class A will have a seven-minute playing time with five-second increment while class B has 15 minutes playing time with five-second increment.
The champions in each class will receive P5,000.
Around a hundred wood pushers are expected to compete in the tournament.
