Gesta ready to fight Linares

CEBUANO boxer Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta wrapped up his training camp at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles and said he’s ready for his fight against WBA lightweight world champion Jorge “El Niño De Oro” Linares of Venezuela.

Both boxers met in a press conference yesterday in Los Angeles to promote their world-title showdown scheduled tomorrow at The Forum.

“Camp is great, Freddie Roach is really smart. He knows what he’s doing. Along with Marvin Zamudio, he has also been great. My conditioning is great thanks to Justine Fortune,” said the 30-year-old Gesta, a native of San Remigio town, north Cebu, who is now based in San Diego, California.

Former sparmate

Gesta, who holds a record of 31 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws, said he is ready to face Linares, who was a former sparring partner of his way back in 2010.

He said he is aware that the 32-year-old Linares, who sports a record of 43-3-0, is a more dangerous opponent now.

“Linares is a world champion. He is quick, fast, and he is a tremendous fighter. He is a champ for a reason,” Gesta said. “We have been studying him and his key will be the speed for me. We plan to pressure and be smart.”

This is Gesta’s second shot at a world title. His first came up short when he lost to Miguel Vasquez by unanimous decision with the IBF world lightweight title at stake . WITH REPORTS FROM FIGHTSCENE.COM
