FILIPINO Fide Master (FM) elect Daniel Quizon rebounded from his fourth round loss on Thursday with a crucial fifth round victory yesterday to stay in contention of the 2018 Boyi Cup China Youth Chess International Open Tournament in Harbin, China.
Quizon was among the tournament leaders after three rounds but suffered a fourth round setback to China’s Peng Hongchi on Thursday. He righted his ship by beating Chinese Wang Xinbo yesterday to climb to 4.0 points, a full point behind solo leader GM Bai Jinshi of China.
Bai defeated Peng to raise his total to 5.0 points in the nine-round Swiss System World Chess Federation (FIDE) sanctioned tournament which is being organized by the Chinese Chess Association.
“With still four rounds left, it’s still anybody’s race,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Vice President Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe.
Quizon, of Dasmarinas, Cavite is one of the country’s brightest young warriors of the 64-square arena today.
Agibileg Uurtsaikh of Mongolia subdued Woman International Master (WIM) Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh of Mongolia while compatriot and Fide Master (FM) Tugstumur Yesuntumur downed International Master (IM) Batsuren Dambasuren to share second place with 4.5 points each.
Meanwhile, Filipinos Michael Concio Jr., Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Kylen Joy Mordido and Jerlyn Mae Moralde San Diego beat their respective fifth round opponents to pad their totals.
Concio has 3.5 points while Mordido and San Diego tally 3.0 points each.
Quizon, Concio, San Diego and Mordido earned their Fide Master (FM) titles by winning gold in last year’s 18th ASEAN age group chess championships in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia.
