Bracketing of Gov’s Cup teams finalized

The bracketing of teams for the upcoming Governor’s Cup Volleyball Tournament was finalized after the refresher course for coaches, team captains and referees last weekend.

Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) executive director Atty. Ramil Abing said they finalized the bracketing of the teams and the schedules of the games during the three-day event that ended Saturday at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The prestigious volleyball meet featuring female players aged 18 years and below will have its grand opening on February 18 also at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The tournament will have two divisions: the North and South. Both will be divided into three clusters each.

In the North division, Mandaue, Cordova, Consolacion, Liloan, San Francisco, and Poro will be in Cluster 1; Danao, Carmen, Catmon, Sogod, Asturias and Balamban make up Cluster 2; and Santa Fe, Medellin, Bogo, Tabogon and Tuburan will duke it out in Cluster 3.

The South will be composed of Talisay City, Minglanilla, Carcar City, and Argao in Cluster 1; Dalaguete, Oslob, Santander and Samboan in Cluster 2; and Ginatilan, Moalboal, Alegria, and Dumanjug in Cluster 3.

Teams will be playing each other in a single round robin format with the top two from each cluster making it to the quarterfinals. They will again play each other in the same format with the top two teams from both divisions advancing to the crossover semifinals.

The champion will receive whooping P300,000 cash prize while runners up get P200,000, P100,000, and P50,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, CPSC officer Brando Velasquez said venues are still being finalized and inspected by the agency.

“The idea is playing home and away so each team must have a home venue. However, as of now, CPSC is still inspecting the venues because some cannot pass the required standards,” he said.
