Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas shows promising form with TKO win over Mexican foe
With his fourth successful title defense and 16th straight victory, Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas continues to build a solid reputation in the mainstream boxing scene.
Highly touted as the next Manny Pacquiao, the Panabo City pride Ancajas scored a 10th-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over Mexican Israel Gonzales to retain his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight title yesterday at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA.
The 26-year-old Ancajas impressed in his debut fight in the United States by flooring Gonzales three times en-route to a TKO victory.
Ancajas improved his record to 29-1-1 (win-loss-draw) with 20 wins by knockouts. More importantly, he defended for the fourth straight time the title he won from Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo in Taguig in 2016.
He previously defended the title against Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, Teiru Konishita, and Jamie Conlan all held last year.
Gonzales suffered his second defeat against 21 wins.
Ancajas, who dreams of being recognized as a great Filipino champion like Pacquiao, the late Flash Elorde and Pancho Villa, decked Gonzalez a minute into the first round. In the tenth round, a couple more left blows resulted into a pair of knock downs that prompted referee Rafael Ramos to stop the fight at the 1:50 mark.
Ancajas, who has been drawing comparisons to Pacquiao because of his crushing left straight, movement, and footwork, is unbeaten since 2012 and extended his winning streak to 16 after the victory over Gonzales. /With a report from the Inquirer
