Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno announced that the Judiciary will beef-up security in the Cebu City Hall of Justice in Qimonda Building, following the killing of lawyer and Ronda ton vice mayor Jonnah John Ungab.
Sereno, who was the key speaker during the “Road to Judicial Reforms Forum” at the Sacred Heart Center in Cebu, said that she is now in talks with Cebu City Hall of Justice Executive Judge Gilbert Moises, to heighten the security in the establishment.
“Especially it’s so symbolic since he just came from a court hearing. I have been in discussion with Executive Judge Moises because I think (the crime scene) is just a few meters away from the Qimonda. It’s so sad. Horrific,” said Sereno.
The chief justice also said that the public should be alarmed with the incident and that regardless with a person’s occupation, no citizen should suffer such fate.
Meanwhile the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu Chapter expressed disappointment on Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido’s statement over the slaying of Ungab.
In an official statement on Wednesday, the group stated that Espenido does not deserve a place in society.
“You cannot continue besmirching a man’s name and reputation further to the abyss especially when that man has no more place to defend himself into; when he passed on to the next life; more so, when he left a wife and six young children defenseless.” IBP Cebu City Chapter stated.
