TAGBILARAN City — Jefferson Lacno is the only athlete from Carmen town, northern Cebu in the 538-strong Cebu Province team competing in the Cviraa meet here.
It’s his first time to compete in this regional meet featuring the best in Central Visayas vying for slots in the team for the Palarong Pambansa.
Yet, this 17-year-old is performing like he’s been here before. In fact, he won a gold medal in the 100-meter sprint event with a time of 11.34 seconds yesterday.
He beat Cebu City’s Jan Menard Ayade (11.38) and Toledo City’s Keith Tyler Inoc (11.47), who finished second and third, respectively.
“As a first timer, I had little expectations. But to my surprise, I was leading during the 100m sprint all the way to the finish line,” said Lacno, the youngest of the five siblings and the only athlete in the family.
This 12th-grader from the Carmen National High School has set some lofty goals for himself and he is on the right track as he is trained by renowned athletic coach Presing Capangpangan of the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) and the trainers of Cebu Provincial Sports Commission’s (CPSC).
“My ultimate dream is to become a member of the national team and to compete in the Olympics. Winning a gold medal in Cviraa and qualifying for the Palarong Pambansa is already a huge achievement for me, but I will not take this for granted, I will train hard and show them I deserve this spot,” said Lacno.
