METRO CEBU WATER SHORTAGE

Two water suppliers will be tapped to offset the projected decline in Metro Cebu’s water supply during the summer season sometime next month.

Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), said Metro Cebu’s water supply usually goes down during summer when the demand is higher due to the large turnout of visitors.

“Historically, during summer the demand for water will increase,” Kara said.

She said surface water sources evaporate due to the heat and absence of rainfall.

Kara said hotels, resorts, malls and other public places where there are large crowds also places a strain on Metro Cebu’s water supply.

She said MCWD is tapping Pilipinas Water Resources Inc. (PWRI) and Abejo Waters Corp. to supply water for their consumers especially in the cities of Cebu and Lapu-Lapu.

Kara said 5,000 cubic meters of water per day from PWRI will be injected in Barangay Mambaling and this could supply water to consumers in the neighboring barangay up to the downtown area of Cebu City.

The Abejo Water Corp. will then supply 7,500 cubic meters of water per day to Lapu-Lapu City, she said.

In the meantime, Kara called on consumers to help conserve water.
