Quiñanola siblings of USC-BED to compete in Asian Universities Chess Championships

SOME of Cebu’s promising woodpushers are set to compete in the Asian Universities Chess Championship, which will be held at the Tagaytay International Convention Center (TICC) in Tagaytay City on May 26 to June 2.

University of San Carlos-Basic Education (USC-BED) head coach and FIDE Arbiter (FA) Felix Poloyapoy Jr. said 2017 Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Regina Catherine Quiñanola, along with her siblings Mary Margaret and Glybel Jane, will be sent to compete in the prestigious event. He has yet to confirm the other players from his team who will be joining the Quiñanola siblings.

University of Cebu’s (UC) head coach International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap, meanwhile, said he has not yet come up with a lineup for the tournament. He added that he will still hold try outs for their team for the tournament.

World Chess Federation (FIDE) Secretary-General and Cavite 7th District Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr., also serving as the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) secretary-general, said that the Asian Universities Chess Championship is open to all affiliated with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines of Asia in Zones 3.1 to 3.7 of FIDE.

“The City of Tagaytay under the auspices of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Asian Chess Federation and FIDE have the honor to invite all National Chess Federation of the Philippines in Asia to participate in the Asian Universities Chess Championship,” said Rep. Tolentino.

Rep. Tolentino added that the events to be contested are the Men’s Individual Event, Women’s Individual Event, Men’s Team Event, Women’s Team Event, Junior Individual Event and Junior Team Event.
