Webmasters acquire former SWU volleyball head coach

THE UNIVERSITY of Cebu (UC) Webmasters has high hopes for its volleyball teams after signing up multi-titled coach Lemuel “Dave” Arreza, who has led Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras to several titles in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi).

“Basing on his record, we expect that we will be among the top teams in the Cesafi,” Jessica Honoridez, the UC athletic manager, told Cebu Daily News. “Because our volleyball teams’ performance is not quite doing well. So we decided to replace our coaching staff.”

Honoridez said that Arreza had previously applied as a coach for UC but missed out on it because the position was already given to Dolores Opoc and Paul Miranda, former coaches of the women’s and men’s volleyball teams, respectively.

According to Honoridez, Arreza has organized a four-day volleyball tryout for the UC Webmasters last April 3 to 6 and attracted about 200 aspiring spikers.

“The number of people, both for the men’s and women’s, who tried out is significantly large,” said Honoridez adding that “one of the heads told me that this is the first time that we had a tryout that drew a lot of aspiring athletes.”

Arreza is currently in Vigan City for the Palarong Pambansa serving as the assistant coach of the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association secondary boys’ volleyball team.

Honoridez mentioned that Arreza planned to extend the tryouts after the Palarong Pambansa up to the month of May.

“Volleyball is a good sport so we want to give our best support to the players who will be representing our school … So now, we give them a credible coach who is reliable and a true performer,” said Honoridez.
